When you follow the steps in this tutorial: http://www.fundmanagersoftware.com/tutor_ports.html you are creating "sub-portfolios". These are not the same as folders on your file system. These are only internal sub-portfolios in the currently opened portfolio file (*.mm4). When you create a sub-portfolio it is still within the same portfolio you have open at the time. Portfolio files store all the sub-portfolios and their heirarchy, along with all the investments in each sub-portfolio. Each portfolio file can have an unlimited number of sub-portfolios. The tutorial is describing how you can take several top level flat portfolios, and combine them into one portfolio file (*.mm4) that has multiple sub-portfolios. Once you do this, you always work out of this one portfolio file. You really won't find yourself using "File / Open Portfolio..." anymore, as they are all stored in your one portfolio file. Maybe some better terminology may be calling the .mm4 file a "workspace", rather than a portfolio. This one file (*.mm4) contains the definition of all the sub-portfolios. Sub-portfolios you create in your workspace are not actual folders on your hard drive... Thanks, : fm is open. there is an icon at the top called 'open portfolio'. when you click on it, it shows a list of portfolios, and in my case the 'samples' folder. i expect to see the folder (subdirectory, using older terminology) that i created, according to the editor tutorial in that window. then, when i click on that folder (assuming it was there)i would see the portfolios that i had to create, name and populate with the investments that were already in the portfolio of the same name, but not in that folder. : i don't know what you mean by " bunch of top level portfolio files" or "convert to a single portfolio file with sub-portfolios" . these terms probably have precise meanings to you as the programmer. i don't know the meaning of them, so can't answer the question. perhaps you can give a visual explanation of what i would see if i chose one over the other. : re: " Open up the portfolio file you want to move, and do a "File / Save Portfolio As..." and save it to the destination location you want." i figured out how to do this, though it isn't straightforward; having to click on the portfolio name, then click on the folder name, then click open, then click save. it takes a leap of faith to assume that the port will wind up in the folder. this method seems better than the portfolio editor method, which didn't seem to work at all. how is this method different than using the editor? : btw, sorry about the double post. i didn't realize the first post actually posted, and would have deleted it, but don't see an edit icon on the board. another problem is having to enter name and security code with every reply. it it isn't entered the user winds up at a page that says "You forgot to fill in the 'Name' field in your posting. Correct it below and re-submit. The necessary fields are: Name, Subject and Message". filling in those fields then leads to another error message about the security code missing, though there isn't a field to enter the security code in that window, nor any mention of it being necessary. : : : well, i have read the tutorial. i have tried it a few times. at this point i can't find the sub directory in the list of portfolios. i did save it when it asked me to. : : : at this point my response is that this system seems very cumbersome, switching back and forth, back and forth, between portfolios copying and pasting. perhaps 'relative file paths' isn't the most efficient approach. wouldn't absolute paths allow simply dragging the portfolio to a new folder, without need for a special editor, saving as, copying and pasting, opening and closing? : : : i already have the portfolios, named, with the investments in them. is there not some way to group them under a common heading so that i don't have to see all of them everytime i open other portfolios. : : : : What do you mean by "sub directory in the list of portfolios"? Do you want to have a bunch of top level portfolio files (*.mm4), or would you like to convert to a single portfolio file with sub-portfolios? The later is easiest, and you would not have to ever switch back and forth between portfolio files. : : If you want to move your portfolio files and keep all the individual portfolio files, you can do this, but you must do it through Fund Manager, and not Windows Explorer, so that the relative path of their investments is updated when they are saved. Open up the portfolio file you want to move, and do a "File / Save Portfolio As..." and save it to the destination location you want. You can then safely delete the old portfolio file. : : Thanks,
