Meaning of 'Close Portfolio' or 'Close All Investments'

How does this menu command handle opened portfolios? Is it supposed to save subporfolios and portfolios upon closing them, or does it close them without saving any changes?

I just spent about an hour building a subportfolio, and after closing and re-opening the subportfolio, none of the changes appeared, which is rather a disaster for me.

On a related note, how can one tell how many portfolios or subportfolios are opened? The only way opened subportfolios seems discernable is the flickering screen, so far as I can tell.
